What Kind of Editing Do You Need?
Developmental Editing focuses on the big picture: story structure, character arcs, plot holes, pacing, stakes, and thematic resonance. The editor reads the entire manuscript and provides a detailed report on what is working, what is not, and how to fix it. Think of this as addressing the architecture of the house — are the walls in the right place? Does the foundation hold?
Line Editing happens at the sentence and paragraph level. The editor refines your prose for clarity, rhythm, voice consistency, word choice, and emotional impact — without rewriting your story. This is the interior design pass: making sure every room feels right when you walk through it.
Proofreading is the final cleanup pass. The editor catches typos, spelling errors, punctuation mistakes, grammar issues, and formatting inconsistencies. This is the paint touch-up before you list the house — nothing structural, but everything needs to look polished.
Most manuscripts benefit from all three, in that order. But if you are not sure where your project stands, developmental editing is usually the place to start.
